When I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his family support to keep him focused.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. However, he's frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the main top prize in the future.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
