Melbourne Storm Player Eli Katoa Sidelined for Whole 2026 Season After Multiple Head Impacts and Neurosurgery

The Storm forward Eli Katoa has been officially ruled out the complete 2026 NRL season as he continues his recovery at home in Victoria, after coming back from a extended period in New Zealand where he underwent brain surgery.

Sequence of Events

The 25-year-old athlete suffered three head impacts in a single match while playing for the Tongan national team in a international fixture against the Kiwis. Subsequently, he experienced convulsions while off the field, necessitating urgent medical care.

A medical operation to relieve bleeding on the brain left the player in the hospital and temporarily grounded to his club base.

The club revealed recently that the forward has now come back and is on the mend, having also made a brief visit to a local medical facility.

“His health and recovery remain our number one priority,” said the club's chief executive Justin Rodski. “We are thrilled to have him home safely and under the care of our medical staff and specialist physicians.”

The Road to Recovery

Rodski noted that the athlete is improving each day and is eager to pursuing his recovery in a home environment.

Importantly, the CEO stated that there is no timeframe for his return to health or a comeback to the field.

“In consultation with our medical team and neurology experts, Katoa won't be back to practice during the preseason and is ruled out for the 2026 season,” he emphasized. “There is a lengthy recovery process ahead of him, and his primary goal will be on returning to full health prior to contemplating a potential comeback to training.”

Rodski concluded by noting that Eli is a much loved and respected member of our team and organization, and that the Storm family will rally around him and support him through his recovery.

Broader Context

The NRL is currently finalizing its inquiry into the circumstances that led to Katoa’s surgery.

The powerful forward, who was named in the league's best lineup at the recent Dally M awards, appeared to suffer a concussion during the pregame routine for the international contest.

Despite this, he was allowed to play in the match and endured two more head impacts before being substituted in the second half.

Katoa’s condition worsened rapidly, and he required oxygen beside the field before being removed from the field on a medicab.

The league has attempted to address concerns around concussions in the game in recent years, introducing crackdowns on dangerous contact and expanding the mandatory recovery time for affected players.
