Labuschagne Dropped from Australian ODI Lineup to Face India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a surprise inclusion.
Recent Form Result in Omission
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI squad after managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI innings.
The 31-year-old has played 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now continue to press his claims a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates
There have been indications of a improvement in form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a hundred for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a red-ball recall as Australia search for a fix to their batting top-order problems.
Bowling Returns and Fitness Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he works to regain fitness from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-match series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a 2-0 series win last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
