The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
