A Career Dedicated to the Arts

Hailing from Trowbridge in 1931, he established himself as a cherished figure who popularised classical music for millions.

He served as the BBC’s head of music and arts during the 1960s and 1970s, receiving awards for productions such as The Golden Ring.

He also initiated the Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978, a platform that discovered talents such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.

Tributes and a Lasting Legacy

Heartfelt tributes poured in, recognising his immense impact on the world of arts broadcasting.

A colleague remarked, “His was an incredible life, leaving behind a remarkable legacy... He was a figure of great charisma and insight.

An honorary society honoured him, asserting he had done more than most to reveal music's marvels and established a standard of excellence.

Collaborations and Later Career

He worked closely with musical giants like Yehudi Menuhin and Leonard Bernstein, penning a biography of Bernstein.

Later, he brought his expertise to a classical radio network, his trademark zeal solidifying his reputation as a definitive cultural voice.

His family said he was “deeply loved” and that his driving purpose of sharing classical music was “truly inspirational.”

Honours and Final Thoughts

Among his numerous accomplishments was playing a key role in a television network and hosting the arts show Aquarius.

He was the recipient of three British Academy awards and four Emmy awards, and was knighted in the 2020 New Year Honours.

In his 2021 autobiography, he expressed a hope for broadcasters to be bold with new music programmes, lamenting a decline in audience for talent competitions.
