Doris Included in Ireland Selection But McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has included skipper Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn matches, however lock McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to play against New Zealand in the US on 1 November.
Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the first Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Ulster player Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out because of injury, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the summer tour.
Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped member in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities states uncapped provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will head to Chicago as "reserves".
After playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous meeting, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said Farrell, back to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is remains available, with the two players set to face off for the first time in Saturday's URC match at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected with the coach deciding not to calling up the province's Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a recall for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, though the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at full-back.
Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship games this season and featured in the second string's defeat by England in the English city previously.
McCarthy was selected in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a international appearance.
Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to cover for the captain should the captain fails to recover fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.
The national team will meet in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
