2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been far from new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. Yet, their visibility has noticeably increased in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious amphibian adventures.
A Data-Driven Dive
To grasp this rise, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's rising status in the broader culture is partially evident elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the explosion in gaming looks especially strong.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer built-in creative potential for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that often become a highlight in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues facilitate a host of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the featured titles smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year so far.
When these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be entering a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
